Saint Paul’s Thrift Shop is full of great finds and materials for a unique DIY project. Today you can learn how to turn a simple, in-expensive metal tray into a pretty chalkboard.
The Thrift Shop has several metal trays perfect for this project. They range in price from $1-$3.50. I chose this oval shaped tray for its narrow design, and transformed it into a home accent to display inspirational Bible verses. Continue reading for the materials, steps, and pictures!
Materials for Chalkboard Tray Edit
  • Silver tray
  • Chalk paint in two different colors.
    • I used Waverly Chalk Paint in Ivory and Ink. If you’re leaving the edge silver you only need one color of paint for the center.
  • Paint brushes
  • Painter’s tape
  • Ribbon
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Picture frame stand
The idea to make a chalkboard tray came from a blog post on Artsy Chicks Rule found on Pinterest.
Steps with edit
  1. Wash and dry the tray.
  2. If you’re painting the outside of the tray begin by painting the entire tray. Let the paint dry.
  3. Tape off the edge of the tray.
  4. Paint the center of the tray. Let the paint dry.
  5. Cover the center with chalk.
  6. Add a bow using the hot glue gun. You can also add magnets, stencil designs, or other decoration.
  7. Display!
