Meet a St. Paul’s Thrift Shop Volunteer- Dick Schmidt

Dick Schmidt St. Paul's Thrift Shop Volunteer Daphne, AL

Dick Schmidt

Since 2011 Dick Schmidt, The Rev. Richard H. Schmidt, has been volunteering as a cashier at St. Paul’s Thrift Shop. Dick served as Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne from 1990 to 2000.

“I began volunteering as a way to help those in need,” Dick said. “The best part about volunteering is to work with the other volunteers, and meet the children at the cash register.”

While working at the Thrift Shop Dick edits a newsletter for volunteers, and rings up purchases at the cash register on Wednesday mornings.

“Our goods are of an unusually high quality as thrift stores go and the volunteers are eager to help,” Dick said.

In addition to 30 years of parish ministry, Dick has written six books on Christian spirituality in print, and was the editor of Forward Day by Day from 2005-2011.

“I thank God every morning for the gift of another “bonus day” because at 72, I figure I’ve lived my life and each day I wake up healthy and happy now is a bonus. I have had, and continue to have, a delightful life,” Dick said.

Dick is a native Kentuckian who has lived in West Virginia, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Alabama. He and his wife, Pam, moved to Daphne in 1990. Dick was also a missionary in Nigeria for a time. He also makes the best cheese soufflé in the world.
